What is body mass index (BMI)?

Your BMI is a measure of your weight taking your height into account. It is generally accurate unless you are particularly fit and heavily muscled, like a body builder or a rugby forward. If so, you may need to have your BMI calculated by An Accredited Practising Dietitian or doctor.

Calculating your BMI

Divide your weight by your height, squared.

For example, a woman weighing 70kg who is 170cm tall would calculate her BMI as:
70 / (1.7 x 1.7) = 70 / 2.89 = BMI of 24.
